Charlie Rangel, a Democratic Congressman from Harlem, has been under investigation with the House Ethics Committee for two years. Just now, as the election season heats up, an ethics panel has announced it has found evidence of ethics violations.
The big question is why has this just come to the surface now? The Democratic Congress has stonewalled every investigation that could possibly find wrong-doing upon the part of fellow Democrats — especially higher-level ones like Rangel. Proof of stonewalling can be found in the Rangel case. It took two years for the Democrats to investigate.
May there be a distraction from more important issues at play? Or did the panel find something so daunting that an attempt had to be made at squelching it before the heart of the election season begins? Or is he the latest in a series of token ‘black-man’ casualties used by the Democratic Party to counter conservative charges of reverse-discrimination and racism? I may be a little cynical, but the Rangel ethics probe does not fit the norms and the narrative of the ruling Democratic Party.
But maybe cynicism is legitimated in the mere fact that he can “make a deal” on crooked behavior not for reasons of justice itself, but for the political advantage of the ruling party.
